Sister Margaret Hendebourck Ballance was born in 1876.
Supplement to The London Gazette, 30 July1918, page 9001: 'Sister Margaret Hendebourck Ballance, St. John's Ambulance Brigade Hospital. For gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy air raid. Her fortitude and courage were most conspicuous. She devoted herself entirely to her patients.' This information was repeated in The Hospital, 10 April 1918, p. 417: No hospital suffered more that awful night than the one attached to St. John Ambulance Brigade. Many awards of the Military Medal were made to the devoted sisters in this building.... Sister M. H. Ballance that her fortitude and courage were most conspicuous and that she devoted herself entirely to her patients.
