The T. R. Hardaker Collection, Roman, Augustus (27 BC – AD 14), denarius, of P. Petronis Turpilianus, struck 19 BC, CAESAR – AVGVSTVS, bare head r., rev. TVR PILIANVS – III VIR, Tarpeia with long hair, wearing chiton, half buried under shields, arms raised in terror, wt.3.67gms. (RIC.63, 299; C.494; BN.I, 78, 157), very fine
In Roman mythology, Tarpeia was the daughter of the Roman commander Spurius Tarpeius. She was a vestal virgin who betrayed Rome to the Sabines at the infamous 'Rape of the Sabine Women', on the premise that the women would reward her with their jewellery. In retaliation they piled their shields on her and crushed her to death. It is thought that the Tarpeian Rock, a cliff on the Capitoline Hill from which traitors were thrown, was named after this story
