A flamen was a priest in ancient Rome. Priesthoods were assigned to all eighteen deities recognised as part of the official cults in the Roman Republican era; the priests of Jupiter, Mars, and Quieinus were known as 'major priests' while the other priests were flamines minores (lesser priests).
