Trajan. AD 98-117. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.01 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck circa mid AD 107-108. Laureate bust right, slight drapery / Trophy of arms set on stump, consisting of helmet at top, two hexagonal shields and a round shield; below, two curved swords and round shield to left and two spears and hexagonal shield to right. Cf. RIC 147b; Woytek 268bC Sonderfall; RSC 100. Toned, areas of minor porosity on reverse. EF. Well centered on a full, round flan. Extremely rare variant of this often seen type with hexagonal shields to upper left of trophy; Woytek singles out this variant as a 'special case'.
