Elizabeth I, first issue, angel, mm. lis (1559-60), wire-line inner circles, St. Michael slaying the dragon, ELIZABETH D G ANG FRA Z HIB REG, rev. ship facing right, bearing shield, cross above, E and rose above, A DNO FACTVM EST ISTVD Z EST MIRABILE, pellet stops, wt. 5.22gms. (S.2513; N.1979; Schneider -; Norweb 361, same dies; Brown & Comber 3A), slightly weakly struck on ship's hull, otherwise almost extremely fine and very rare
*ex Christies, 26th February 1991, lot 598
The combination of REG/MIRABILE was not recorded in Brown & Comber, and not represented in the Schneider collection. The early gold of Elizabeth is generally rare, in any state of preservation, due to numerous withdrawals over at least two centuries by the Royal Mint, which used the newly alloyed gold thus obtained to strike new coins.
