Elizabeth I, milled coinage, pattern shilling, mm. mullet (1560-61), crowned bust A left, in ornate dress decorated between straps, with long, tidy hair down the back of her shoulder, high ruff, frosting below and at left shoulder, crown frosted, band with alternating large and colon jewels, ELIZABETH D G ANG FRAN ET HIB REGINA, rev. long cross fourchée over square shield, POSVI DEV ADIVTOREM MEVM, wt. 6.08gms. (N.2042; Borden & Brown 13-O1/R1, this coin, pl. 1), lightly creased, some wear, good very fine and exceedingly rare
Purchased Baldwin, 1981
'This piece was probably struck in December 1560 or January 1561 as a pattern for the milled coinage. The mullet initial mark was used to denote patterns' (see D. G. Borden and I. D. Brown, 'The Milled Coinage of Elizabeth I', BNJ Sylloge, 1983). The existence of patterns accelerated with the reign of Elizabeth's brother and continued into her reign, whereas previously few are known. Hawkins believed that this and several other patterns of this reign were struck using the new mill process, which now seems evident.
(8000-10000 GBP)
