In 1897, the delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, based in New York, decided to issue coins. The design was created by the engraver Philip Martiny. A contract was signed with the Gorham Mint for a total mintage of 10'000 coins. The production for the type II was carried out in Providence for a total production of 4286 coins before the dies were broken.
