DJIBOUTI. French protectorate, 1884-1977. Countermark on a British India Rupee 1862 (Victoria queen). "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate, struck at Obock: 9.2.6". Lec. 5. AR. 11.66 g. PCGS XF 40
The district of Obock was bought for the sum of 55'000 gold francs on March 11th, 1862 by Edouard Thouvenel, Minister of Foreign Affairs under Napoleon III. In 1884, France, then engaged in a war for the possession of the territory of Annam, was refused by the British Empire the possibility to dock their ships in the harbor of Aden. The government decided to grant the status of a colony to the district on June 24th of the same year and to make it a place of anchorage to the route of the French possessions in the Far East.
