Like the Rhine river, gold panning in the Isar (tributary of the Danube) has been documented since Antiquity. The main extraction activity was in the alluvial areas of the river. Beginning in the 16th century we can find a large quantity of imperial patents in the archives of the Holy Empire authorizing the exploitation of gold deposits. This activity collapsed in the second half of the 19th century, as the cost of extraction became too high for the yield obtained.
