The rapid expansion of the Umayyad Caliphate during VII-VIIIth centuries from Syria towards the Iberian Peninsula resulted in the incorporation of a large non-Muslim population. In order to quickly stabilize the conquered territories, the successive caliphs relied on the constitutions inherited from the Byzantine administration, keeping them in place as much as possible. In this framework, the monetary system was maintained and directly inspired by the coins that Byzantium struck in North Africa.
