ROMAN EMPIRE. Augustus, 27 BC-14 AD. Denarius 20-19 BC, Spain. Obv. Laureate head left. Rev. FORTVN REDVC / CAESARIA AVGVS / S P Q R. Altar. RIC 56b. AR. 3.78 g. AU cleaned
A rare and interesting issue from Augustus. The cult of Fortuna Redux is wide spread in the western provinces of the Roman Empire as a protective deity of the emperor and his safe return from his campaigns.//This issue attributed to a Hispanic mint commemorates the end of the war led by Augustus and Agrippa against Cantabres and Asturias (peoples of present-day northern Spain) which led to the annexation of this territory. The final peace required the presence of two Roman legions, the X Gemina and the IV Macedonica for seventy years.
