SWITZERLAND. Vaud / Waadt. Louis II, 1302-1349. Gros tournois ND (1340-1350), Pierre-Châtel. Av. BNDICTV SIT NOME DNI NRI DEI / LVD - D SA - BAV - DIA. Cross. Rv. PETRCORV M. Crowned châtel, 11 lilies around. HMZ 1-547a var; MIR 61 (R10) AR. 1.44 g. TB
The first Gros for the barony of Vaud were minted in 1297. Towards the end of the 12th century, the influx of precious metals from ecclesiastical treasures favored the emergence of a new currency in Europe to replace the denarius. The first Gros were struck in Venice in 1194, then in France with the Gros tournois. The Vaud example is clearly an imitation of the "Gros à la couronne" of Philippe VI of Valois.
