SWITZERLAND. Vaud / Waadt. Amédée VI, 1343-1383. Denier, Nyon. Imitation of a denier of Geneva. Av. AMED COMES. Cross pattée with a retrograde S in the 1st quarter and a pellet in the 4th. Rv. DE SABAVDIA. Stylised head left. HMZ 1-557 (not priced); Cudazzo 92 (R10). AR. 0.61 g. SUP
Of great rarity with only a few specimens known.//This coinage, minted in Nyon by Amédée VI to compete with, and eventually to replace the episcopal coinage of the Geneva, is a major example from a period where coins are sometimes the only remaining sources available to historians. These coins illustrate the policy of the Counts of Savoy, who for many centuries sought to integrate the city of Geneva among their states, but without success.//The second specimen offered at public auction (the other specimen, illustrated in HMZ, realized CHF 7800 + bp. in 2002).//Our specimen is by far the nicest known.
