(t) CHINA. Chekiang. Silver 1 Mace 4.4 Candareens (20 Cents) Pattern, Year 23 (1897). Anking Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Gold Shield.
L&M-273; cf. K-117; KM-Y-53.5. This immensely impressive and alluring Gem pattern issue presents flawless gunmetal gray surfaces accentuated by some golden-russet toning around the devices. The only example of the type in the PCGS census, this majestic RARITY will undoubtedly be at or near the top of any connoisseur's list, as the chances are exceedingly unlikely of another specimen of this magnitude coming available anytime soon.
Coinage in the Chekiang province began in 1896, with the services being tasked to the mint in Hupeh. Meanwhile, the Anking mint in Anhwei was similarly tasked to produce a series of patterns across four denominations the following year, of which this specimen is a robust survivor.
