EL Stater After 54 BC, GALLIA, GAULISH TRIBES, EBURONES Class II. Triskeles with pellet in circle in center. Rev. horse right between two circles with pellets.Scheers Traité 255.The Eburones were a Celtic or Germanic tribe that settled in the region between the Meuse and the Rhine. They are famously described by Caesar in his 'De Bello Gallico' for one of the tribes that fought the Roman invader the hardest. In 54 BC the Eburones under their king Ambiorix revolted against Caesar and inflicted a stunning defeat on two nearby encamped Roman legions. Despite initial successes the Romans soon proved too strong, and in the years 53 to 51 BC Caesar claims to have nearly wiped the entire tribe from existence. A later second campaign shows that the genocide was not entirely successful, but still had the result that the tribe completely disappeared from the political map.5.41 g Very fine
