AV 60 As Ca. 211–208 BC, ANONYMOUS Rome. Helmeted head of bearded Mars right, VI (ligate) X behind. Rev. ROMA, eagle right on thunderbolt.Syd. 226; Cr. 44/2; Sear 3; Fr. 3.During the later stages of the Second Punic War the Senate issued the first substantial gold coinage until the issue of the Aureus in the form of a 60, 40 and 20 As denomination. It has been argued that the decision to mint gold fractions came from the collapse of the bronze-based monetary system the war had brought about. The depiction of an eagle with a thunderbolt is reminiscent of the coinage of the Ptolemaic kings of Egypt, and it is possible that these coins were minted from the gold contributed by Ptolemy II, and resembled his own coinage as a sign of acknowledgement.
