AV Aureus 14–37 AD, TIBERIUS 14–37 AD Lugdunum. Laureate head right TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS. Rev. Livia as Pax seated right, holding sceptre and branch PONTIF MAXIM.RIC 29; Coh. 15; S. 1760.Ex. Schulman Vault Collection. Tiberius was the firstborn son of Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia Drusilla. After the divorce, his mother remarried the triumvir Octavian, who was later to become Rome's first emperor under the name Augustus. Tiberius was one of Rome´s greatest generals, conquering Pannonia, Dalmatia, Raetia, and parts of Germania for a time. From 6 BC onwards, Tiberius went into voluntary exile on the island of Rhodes, where he remained for eight years. He returned to Rome after the death of Augustus' last grandson Gaius Caesar. Augustus reluctantly adopted Tiberius and acknowledged him as heir to the throne. Suetonius described the last will of Augustus in the Twelve Caesars, and apparently Augustus did not think highly of Tiberius; he even expected him to fail as a ruler.

Tiberius was remembered as a reclusive ruler. Pliny the Elder called him tristissimus hominum, translated as 'the gloomiest of men'. Despite all this, modern history looks at Tiberius as a successful Emperor who left the imperial treasury with nearly 3 billion sestertii upon his death. His reign of 22 and a half year (14-37 AD) was among the longest since Augustus until Antonius Pius surpassed his reign by a few months in 161. At 26 AD Tiberius once again retired to an island retreat and never set foot in Rome for the remainder of his life.7.71 g. Small scratches in field. NGC AU. Strike 5 out of 5; Surface 3 out of 5
