AR Denarius April – Oct. 68 AD, CLODIUS MACER 68 AD Carthago. Draped bust of Victory right L CLODI· MACRI SC. Rev. legionary eagle between two standards LI – B – AVG with LEG III on exergual line.RIC 14; Hewitt 1983, The Coinage of L. Clodius Macer, pl. 11, 22 (this coin). The little-known Lucius Clodius Macer was an imperial legatus stationed in Africa in the mid-1st century AD. In May 68 he revolted against the emperor, Nero, with supposed support from the future emperor Galba. The rebellion was short-lived, as Galba immediately after his own succession as emperor in October 68 had Macer assassinated.

Coins of Clodius Macer are amongst the great rarities of imperial Roman coinage. K.V. Hewitt; The coinage of L. Clodius Macer (The Numismatic Chronicle 1983 p 64-80) lists only 73 specimens, this coin included and shown on plate 11, no. 22. The obverse showing a winged Victory is here coupled with a reverse naming Macer's legion, the Legio III Augusta. Of this type Hewitt lists just 8 coins, and despite new specimens having been discovered since then the example offered for sale here remains of the highest rarity and worth a premium bid.
