Tn5.Known as a modern conquistador of Tierra del Fuego, Julius Popper was a Romanian born Argentine engineer, adventurer and explorer, given permission to mine gold and strike coins on the Argentine side of the island provided by his company, Lavaderos de Oro del Sud (Gold Washers of the South). Using his connections at the Buenos Aires mint he had 10 kg of gold tokens struck after his initial attempts were unsatisfactory. He met his untimely end while under house arrest in Buenos Aires for his participation in the genocide of island natives.
