Belgium - 5 Francs Essai 18(47), Copper, LÉOPOLD I 1831–1865 By Wiener. Head left. Rev. crowned arms divides denomination, date below.Dup. 324; KM. PnA 40.Taking his oath as King of the Belgians on the 21st of July 1831, the reign of King Leopold I was tumultuous. The Dutch making numerous attempts to retake their erstwhile territory, several economic crises, internal political strife between the Liberals and the Catholics and finally the revolution of 1848, were all events the fledgling nation and their first King would face.

This pattern, struck according to the model of Wiener, on a copper planchet and gilded, has been designated by Charles Dupriez as RR, making this very rare piece highly desirable for collectors.Copper gilt. PCGS SP62
