China, Republic Of - Dollar Year 3 (1914), Silver, Provincial coinage, KANSU Bust of Yuan Shih-kai left, dividing SU KAN. Rev. characters within wreath.L&M. 617; KM. Y. 407.Yuan Shih-kai, a statesmen and general, rose to power during the late Qing Dynasty. Having been successful in establishing a modern army as well as a more efficient government in northern China, he was eventually elected as the first president of the Republic of China in 1912. His attempt to reinstate the monarchy in China, with himself as Emperor Hongxian of the Empire of China, was short lived. His death after his abdication marked the end of the Beiyang government as the central authority in China.
