China, Republic Of - 10 Yuan n.d. (1919), Gold, Provincial coinage, YUNNAN Bust of general Táng Jìyáo facing. Rev. crossed flags, star above, numeral 1 below.L&M 1057; Fr. 10; KM. Y. 482.Having been selected by the Qing government, he went on to study military theory at Tokyo Shimbu Gakko in Japan. While there he met Sun Yat-sen, joining the Tongmenghui, the revolutionary society dedicated to overthrowing the monarchy. Returning to Yunnan in 1908, he eventually went on to participate in the Wuchang Uprising under General Cài È, that would mark the beginning of the Xinhai Revolution, which in turn would be the end of the Qing Dynasty.
During his office he developed the opium trade in Yunnan, the poppy being very suited to the climate. He succeeded in producing and transporting vast amounts of the drug via Indochina to Haiphong, eventually reaching China via the coast, all so that he could finance weapons purchases for his army.
