Great Britain - Noble n.d, Gold, HENRY VI, First Reign 1422–1461 London. Annulet issue. The king standing in ship, holding sword and arms. Annulet by sword arm, trefoil stops. Rev. floriated cross, crowned leopards in angles, annulet in one spandrel, mm. lis, ∴ after IHC.S. 1799; N. 1414; Fr. 112 (25).The troubled reign of Henry VI marks the height of the War of the Roses, a bloody civil war fought between two branches of the royal Plantagenet dynasty. King Henry was the third king of the House of Lancaster to hold the English throne, but his rule was contested by the head of the House of York. After a defeat at Towton, Henry was deposed and the Yorkist pretender was crowned Edward IV. With support from some of the English nobles he returned from exile in 1470 and reversed the roles; now Edward fled into exile while Henry was restored. After just six months Edward returned once more and routed the Lancastrian forces decisively at Tewkesbury in 1471. Henry was confined to the Tower of London where he died shortly after. As his only son had fallen at Tewkesbury, the male line of the House of Lancaster died out. Eventually a descendant in the female line would regain the throne and establish the House of Tudor.
