A highly successful military commander, Septimius Severus enlarged the Roman Empire significantly both in the east and in north Africa. The triumphal arch which still stands in the Forum in Rome was dedicated in 203 to commemorate the Parthian campaign and provide a lasting monument to his achievements. The Historia Augusta relates that, following the victory against the Parthians, the Senate granted Severus a military triumph, but suffering from gout he gave permission for Caracalla to lead the procession instead.
