Indonesia, Sumatra, Atjeh (c. early 19th century-1853), tin / lead Pitis (12), legend in corrupt Arabic, badar atjeh dar as-salam (Port of Atjeh, abode of Peace), several with traces of date, one with clear date AH1260 (1844), different legend varieties (KM 1; Millies (1871), plate XVII, 151-153), selected coins in fine style, extremely fine for type (12).
These cast coins were cast as a local currency for the port town (bandar) of Atjeh and may have also circulated in the surrounding areas. They are attributed to Sultan `Ali Iskandar Shah,1836 - 1857 at a time when he was at war with his uncle Sultan ´Ala al-Din Mansur Shah (Tuanku Ibrahim).
Recently many coins with variations on the same legends and partial dates have been found. The variety of coins found in this and the next lot suggests that they were cast over a longer period than first thought.
