Gupta Dynasty, Kumaragupta I (Mahendraditya) (415-455 AD), Gold Dinar, "Horseman - Right" type, Obv: the king, in finely ornamented, riding a ceremonially adorned horse to the right, wearing a buttoned coat, trousers and a bejewelled turban, holding a bow in his left hand whose upper part is visible just above the neck of the horse and sword in his right, Brahmi legend "Prithivitalesvarandrah Ku........ragupto (jayatya jitah)" around the field, Rev: the goddess Lakshmi, her ears, neck, arms, wrists, waist and ankles heavily bejewelled, nimbate, seated facing left on a wicker stool, the left hand of the goddess rests on her waist, holding a lotus with a long stalk, feeding grapes to a peacock on the left field, the peacock's tail is fanned out, tamgha on the top-left field, Brahmi legend "Ajitamahendra" on the right, 8.07g, 19.37mm, (Altekar. Bayana Hoard # Pl. XXV-11 to 12/Variant of TOTGE, S. Kumar # Class III-Var.F-2), about extremely fine, struck on a large flan, Exceedingly Rare.



Note: This example of the imperial Horseman variety has the fully visible peacock on its reverse, making it an exceptionally attractive specimen.
