IONIA. Klazomenai. Circa 375-360 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 4.00 g, 12 h), Antiphanes, magistrate. Laureate and draped bust of Apollo facing three-quarters to left. Rev. ANTIΦAN-H-Σ / KΛ-A Swan standing left, preening its chest. SNG Copenhagen 13 (same dies). Warren 1085 (this coin). Very rare. A wonderful and beautifully toned coin of the finest late Classical style. Good very fine.

From the Kleinkunst Collection and that of Elisabeth Washburn King, property of the Bryn Mawr college, Christie's, 10-11 December 1992, 721, acquired from Charles Morley in 1945 for 125 $ and from the E. P. Warren Collection, Sotheby's, 2-3 May 1905, 70.

This is a different kind of Apollo as compared to lot 189 above: the face is fuller and younger, and reminiscent of some of the finest facing heads of Apollo from Amphipolis, in particular Lorber Type B, pl. I, Fig. 2. Our coin was once part of the celebrated collection of E.P. Warren, who assembled one tetradrachm, one didrachm, nine drachms and three hemidrachms from Klazomenai with facing heads of Apollo - an inconceivable achievement to the modern collector, all the more, considering Warren carefully selected only the most beautiful and well struck examples.
