DYNASTS OF LYCIA. Uncertain dynast, circa 500-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 9.33 g). Forepart of a boar to left, ending in a rectangle with two pelleted lines. Rev. Incuse square, with indentations on three sides, divided by large III. Müseler -, cf. II, 1-2, SNG Copenhagen -, cf. 4 and SNG Keckman II -, cf. 419 (all of differing style and with large X on the reverse). SNG von Aulock -, cf. 4055 (boar to right). An extremely rare and unusual issue. Nicely toned and with a particularly ferocious boar. Good very fine.

The Lycian staters of this type invariably show a large X within the reverse incuse (see below, lot 223), whereas this example has two tapered vertical lines with a third, thinner line in between.
