SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.13 g, 4 h), circa 430. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Head of Arethusa to right, wearing broad headband fastened above her ear, double-spiral earring and plain necklace, with her hair bound up behind her head under the headband and curling up behind; around, four dolphins. Basel 446 (this coin). Boehringer 634 (V321/R436). Jameson 770 (same dies). SNG ANS 203 (same dies). SNG Lockett 950 (this coin). A beautiful and well pedigreed piece with a fine head of Arethusa. Good very fine.
