MYSIA. Pergamum. Commodus, 177-192. Medallion (Orichalcum, 45 mm, 51.00 g, 7 h), M. Ai. Glykonianos, magistrate, circa 180-182. ΑYΤΟ ΚΑΙ Μ ΑYΡΗ ΚΟΜΟΔΟϹ Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Commodus to right. Rev. ΕΠΙ CΤΡ Μ ΑΙ ΓΛYΚΩΝΙΑΝΟY // ΠΕΡΓΑΜΗΝΩΝ / Β ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ Commodus, in military attire, standing front, head to right, on base, holding spear in his right hand and erecting, with his left, trophy set on higher base to right, in front of which a captive is seated to left; to left, female figure wielding double-axe, about to sacrifice bull standing left below the captive. RPC IV.2 3255.5 = SNG Paris 2166 (same dies). Very rare. A bold and impressive medaillon with an interesting reverse. Somewhat smoothed and with light doubling on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

The reverse of this impressive medallion celebrates an imperial victory, most likely the conclusion of peace with Germanic tribes on the Danube river in 180 after the fourteen-year long and hard-fought Marcomannic Wars.
