PHRYGIA. Hierapolis. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Pentassarion (Bronze, 31 mm, 18.69 g, 6 h), time of the Severans, 193-235. Bearded head of Herakles to right, with club over his left shoulder. Rev. IЄPAΠOΛЄITΩN Asklepios standing front, head to left, leaning right on serpent-entwined staff. BMC -, cf. 50-53 (for obverse). SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Leypold -. SNG München -, cf. 219 (same obverse die, but differing reverse). SNG Tübingen -. SNG von Aulock -, cf. 3622 (same obverse die, but differing reverse). Apparently unpublished save for its previous auction appearance. An impressive issue of vigorous style. Minor corrosion on the reverse and partially retoned, otherwise, good very fine.
