Constans, 337-350. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.50 g, 7 h), Siscia, 342/3. FL IVL CONS-TANS P F AVG Laurel-and-rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constans to right. Rev. OB VICTORIAM TRIVMPHALEM / SIS✱ Two victories, on left and right, supporting between them a wreath inscribed VOT / X / MVLT / XV. Depeyrot 9/1. RIC 115. A splendid example of this interesting victory issue. Tiny edge scrapes on the reverse edge, otherwise, virtually as struck.

From the collection of a retired senior air force officer, ex Numismatica Ars Classica 75 ('An important Series of late Roman and Byzantine Coins'), 18 November 2013, 328.

This issue celebrates Constans' victory against the Franks in spring-summer 342 and likely also refers to his journey to Britain in January-February 343, as multipla from Treveri (RIC 121) and Thessalonica (RIC 61) with the related legend TRIVMFATOR GENTIVM BARBAROVM show the emperor placing his right foot on a prow. Unfortunately, we do not know what prompted Constans' visit to the northwesternmost province, but the fact that he crossed the Channel in winter indicates that he was reacting to a military crisis, perhaps to an invasion by the Picts.
