Constantius II, 337-361. Solidus (Gold, 23 mm, 4.51 g, 6 h), Antiochia, 337-347. CONSTAN-TIVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II to right. Rev. VICTO-RIA AVG / SMANЄ Victory advancing left, holding trophy in her right hand and palm frond in her left; in field to left, star; in field to right, LXXII. Depeyrot 2/2. RIC 7. A beautiful coin of splendid style. Minor areas of weakness and with a few light marks on the obverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.
The numeral LXXII = 72 on the reverse of this issue is a value mark, as the solidus was fixed by Constantine I upon its introduction in late 309 or early 310 at 1/72 of a Roman libra = 4.55 g.
