UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 18 mm, 4.42 g, 12 h), 'Early Group'. Imitating Antoninus Pius, 138-161. ANTONINV[S] AVS P IR P L III Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. IƆIHTƆI\/[...]EIIΞ\/ Victory hurrying right, both hands raised; in upper left field, pellets (stylized wreath?). Holed and with a minor scrape on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.
Unlike the obverse, which is clearly derived from an aureus of Antoninus Pius and carries somewhat sensible legends, the reverse is a freer and much more stylized copy, perhaps of a coin showing Victory with a wreath.
