UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Mid 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 19 mm, 5.77 g, 7 h), 'Stern Group'. Imitating Marcus Aurelius, 161-180, or Septimius Severus, 193-211. IΛNTONNI[...]ΛISCIΛCSII Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius or Septimius Severus to right. Rev. IICSΛ ΛIIΛS / C Aequitas standing front, head to left, holding scales in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. Holed and with a minor scrape on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

Like lot 1863, this is another distant copy of an aureus with an Aequitas-reverse. The emperor's head is reminiscent of Marcus Aurelius, but his plaited beard perhaps also reflects Septimius' facial hair.
