UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Quinarius' (Gold, 18 mm, 3.86 g, 12 h), 'Gordian Group'. Imitating Elagabalus, 218-222. IMP ANTONINVS Laureate and draped bust of Elagabalus to left. Rev. N CODRNS AVGVSTOR T P XV / OS III Marcus Aurelius, togate on the left, and Lucius Verus, togate on the right, standing facing each other and clasping their right hands around scroll. Aurum Barbarorum I, 786 (same dies, there described as showing Marcus Aurelius on the obverse). Cf. Calicó 1821 ff. and 2109 ff. (for reverse prototypes). Minor die breaks and with the suspension loop broken off, otherwise, very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

This coin brings us a charming combination of an obverse showing Elagabalus (see also below, lots 1873-1874) with a reverse of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. Once again, this amply attests the circulation of older Roman aurei in the 'Barbaricum'.
