UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Subaeratus, 22 mm, 6.32 g, 2 h), 'Tetrarchic Adventus Group B'. Imitating Diocletian, 284-305. DIOCLIEHIVS O O HVGVSTVS Laureate head of Diocletian to left. Rev. COS IIII Diocletian on horseback to right, raising his right hand in salute. Cf. Calicó 4446 (for prototype). An attractive piece with almost no breaks in the plating. Good very fine.

From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.

Early imitations of the Tetrarchic Adventus-aurei still retain somewhat decent legends. In the case of this example, the prototype is Calicó 4446, an aureus from Cyzicus dated to 290-292.
