UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Subaeratus, 20 mm, 5.83 g, 1 h), 'Tetrarchic Adventus Group B'. Imitating Maximianus, 286-305. HXINIHVS IIVCVSTVS Laureate head of Maximianus to left. Rev. COS III Maximianus on horseback to left, raising his right hand in salute. Cf. Calicó 4635 (for prototype with both types to right). Minor traces of mounting and with some flan faults on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.
From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.
It seems that the Germanic artist forgot to mirror the type and legend while engraving this reverse die, resulting in a mirrored reverse on his final product, the coin. The flan faults on the obverse are likely a sign of gold plating beginning to fracture; thus, the coin is presumably a subaeratus.
