MEROVINGIANS. 'Cicate'. Circa 600-650. Tremissis (Gold, 13 mm, 1.32 g, 12 h), Medulfo, moneyer. CICATE - •VICO Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust to right. Rev. MEDVLFO+MONETA+ Latin cross within pelleted border. Belfort -. Depeyrot -. Prou -. Unpublished and unique. A beautifully struck and very attractive piece. A few light marks, otherwise, good extremely fine.

The legends on this intriguing tremissis are clear: it was struck by the moneyer Medulfo in the vicus Cicate. Unfortunately, none of our sources mentions such a place name and it is therefore currently unclear where exactly Cicate lay.
