ISLAMIC, Egypt & Syria (Pre-Fatimid). Tulunids. Khumarawaih, AH 270-282 / AD 884-896. Dirham (Silver, 17 mm, 2.43 g, 1 h), a donative issue citing the Abbasid caliph al-Mutamid' ala Allah, the heir apparent al-Mufawwid ala Allah and the Tulunid ruler Khumarawayh. Misr, AH 274 = AD 887/8. In inner field, 'There is no God but God alone, Muhammad is the messenger of God, 'al-Mufawwid ala Allah'; in inner margin, 'in the name of God this dirham was struck in Misr in the year four and seventy and two hundred'; in the outer margin, 'the command is God's, past and future, and on that day the faithful will rejoice in the victory granted by God'; all in Kufic. Rev. In inner field, 'for God Muhammad is the messenger of Allah', 'al-Mutamid' ala Allah' and 'Khumarawayh'; in outer margin, 'Muhammad is the messenger of Allah who sent him with guidance and the religion of truth that he might make it supreme over all other religions, even though the polytheists may detest it'; all in Kufic. This donative issue was struck by Khumarawaih, the son of Ahmad ibn Tulun, who was a Turkish military slave and high official in the court of the Abbasid caliph al-Musta'in before founding his own dynasty.
