Fast vorzügliches Exemplar mit schöner Tönung

El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in all of Central America. Although it gained independence from Spain in 1821 it was quite some time before the country issued its own federal coinage. It remained part of the Central American Republic until the federation dissolved in 1839, and El Salvador became an independent republic in 1841. The first attempts at the production of a federal coinage were made in 1861 during the presidency of Gerardo Barrios. Although coinage was issued in El Salvador prior to this, it was limited to provisional issues and the countermarking of foreign coins. Although well executed in style and design the 1861 Barrios coinage failed to reach fruition. Although a good president, the political view of Barrios found El Salvador at war with Guatemala. Inevitably this led to Guatemala taking full control of the capital city of San Salvador. Barrios fled to Nicaragua where he was captured and extradited back to El Salvador. Shortly thereafter he was tried and executed. The dream of issuing El Salvador's first federal coinage died with Barrios. It was nearly three decades later that El Salvador commissioned the Heaton mint for the production of its own coinage.
