Ancients
Anonymous (ca. 170-150 BC?). AR imitative denarius (19mm, 4.16 gm, 12h). NGC VF 5/5 - 5/5. Uncertain mint in Dacia (?). Head of Roma right, wearing pendant earring and winged helmet decorated with griffin crest; X behind, dotted border / Dioscuri galloping right, both holding couched spears; CAC (garbled) below, ROMA in frame below, dotted border. cf. GR Series (199-170 BC), Crawford 169/1. Sydenham 289. Sempronia 1 all for prototypes.
From the Bacchus Collection
An extremely rare imitation in overall exceptionally good style with only two outstanding features belying the issuer - the Dioscuri appear as cloaked skeletal forms, much in the manner of modern Day of the Dead figures, and the GR series mark is corrupted into a jumble of letters.
