Ancients
M. Furius L.f. Philus (ca. 121-119 BC). AR denarius (19mm, 3.79 gm, 11h). NGC Fine 4/5 - 4/5. Rome. M•FOVRI•L•F, laureate head of Janus / PHLI (PH ligate), Roma standing left, transverse spear in left hand, crowning with wreath in right hand Gallic trophy flanked by carnyx and shield on each side; star above, ROMA to right. Crawford 281/1. Sydenham 529. Furia 18.

From the Bacchus Collection

The moneyer is presumably the son of L. Furius Philus, consul in 103 BC. The symbolism of Roma with the Gallic trophy and accoutrements is likely referring to the defeat of the Allobroges and Avrverni in the triumphs of 120 BC.
