Contemporary counterfeit of military mint traveling with Antony, uncertain (Corcyra?) mint, ca. summer 40 BC, Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus, imperator. ANT•IMP•-III•VIR•R•P•C, bare head of Marc Antony right; lituus right in left field / CN•DOMIT•-AHENOBARBVS IMP, prow right; star above. cf. Crawford 521/2. Sydenham 1179. This rare issue commemorates the reconciliation of Marc Antony and Ahenobarbus in 40 BC and clearly this ancient forgery was successfully used in commerce for a period of time as evidenced by the amount of wear.
