Marc Antony, as Imperator and Triumvir (43-30 BC). AR fourree denarius (18mm, 2.61 gm, 7h). NGC VF 4/5 - 3/5, core visible. Contemporary counterfeit of military mint traveling with Antony, uncertain (Corcyra?) mint, ca. summer 40 BC, Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus, imperator. ANT•IMP•-III•VIR•R•P•C, bare head of Marc Antony right; lituus right in left field / CN•DOMIT•-AHENOBARBVS IMP, prow right; star above. cf. Crawford 521/2. Sydenham 1179. Antonia 56 and Domitia 23 for prototype issues.

From the Bacchus Collection

This rare issue commemorates the reconciliation of Marc Antony and Ahenobarbus in 40 BC and clearly this ancient forgery was successfully used in commerce for a period of time as evidenced by the amount of wear.
