Octavian, as Sole Imperator (30-27 BC). AR denarius (19mm, 3.80 gm, 12h). NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 4/5. Uncertain mint in Italy, 30-29 BC. Laureate bust of Apollo of Actium right / IMP•CAESAR, Octavian, veiled and in priestly robes, ploughing right with team of oxen. RIC I 272.
From the Bacchus Collection
The reverse of this handsome type depicts Octavian as founder of Nicopolis in Epirus, which he established in 31 BC at the site of the battle of Actium, commemorating his landmark victory over Antony and Cleopatra. It is likely he followed the tradition shown, using an ox team and plow to mark the boundaries of the new city with a furrow.
