IMP CAESAR-AVGVST, bare head of Augustus left / P CARISIVS LEG-PRO PR, city view of Emerita from bird's eye perspective, featuring city-wall, gates and battlements; EMERITA in entablature above gates. This issue was minted to commemorate the founding of Colonia Emerita Augusta by Augustus in 25 BC, for veterans of Legions V Alaudae and X Gemina who had just finished campaigning in northwestern Spain. The city was completed in 23 BC by the governor of Lusitania, P. Carisius.
