Great Britain 1777. George III: "Pattern" 5 Guineas (S.3723A; W&R.78 var; cf.L&S.3) by R. Yeo. Plain edge, white metal, struck en médaille. Obverse: laureated long-haired bust with lovelock of hair on the left shoulder with hair falling below truncation. Reverse: Crowned shield of arms. Possibly a unique piece; known in gold from a couple of specimens but not in any other metal and thought ot be of the hand of Richard Yeo (died 1779). This piece probably represents a first specimen striking in the production of a pattern coin. A soft white metal flan would have been used so as not to harm the dies in any way, and thus the initial idea of the realistic appearance of the coin could be gained. Ex One Hundred Numismatic Rarities, Baldwin's Auction 48, 26 September 2006, lot 5034; ex Dix Noonan Webb, 20 March 2013, lot 490.
