Crusaders, Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. Anonymous AV Dinar/Bezant. Akka (Acre) mint(?), probably second phase (circa AD 1148-1159). Imitating a Fatimid dinar in the name of the Caliph al-Amir (AH 495-524/AD 1101-1130), struck at al-Mu'izziya al-Qahira, in AH [..]18 (AH 518?) "Al-imam/al-Mansur" in two lines across field; continuation of name and title of al-Amir in inner margin; mint formula in outer margin with the partially date 8, followed by the tens / "al/ghaya" in two lines across field; Qur'an IX, 33 in inner margin; Kalima in outer margin. Cf. Malloy 1994, p. 116 no. 3; cf. for prototype Nicol's type A, but see n° 2560, where he mentions and illustrates a similar coin as a possibly crusader imitation. 3.87g, 21mm, 2h.

Near Extremely Fine. Extremely Rare, unusually high quality for the type and very attractive as such.

From the inventory of a UK dealer.

This coin was firstly reported by Loewe (Loewe L., Observations on a unique Kufic Gold Coin, London 1849). That is the same type of present coin, struck by different dies, but executed probably by the same engraver and with the same date. Loewe didn't recognize that it was a crusader copy and attributed it to the Fatimid al-Amir, ascribing to the date of AH 518, also in consideration of the fact that al-Ma'mun had established a new mint at New Cairo (al-Mu'izziya al-Qahira) in the year AH 516, which operated under al-Amir until the year AH 524. Malloy classifies this coin as a dinar struck at 'Akka (Acre) in imitation of those of the Fatimid Caliph al-Amir, second phase circa AD 1148-1159.
