Kings of Bithynia, Nikomedes I or II Æ18. Nikaia, circa 279-255 BC. Laureate head of Apollo to right / Boar running to right; ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ above ΝΙΚΟΜΗ below. Roma E-56, lot 444; CNG 114, lot 192; otherwise unpublished. 5.35g, 19mm, 6h.
Good Very Fine. Extremely Rare, apparently the third known example after the Roma example ($420) and the specimen sold by CNG ($900).
From the inventory of a UK dealer.
Bearing an obverse type well attested for Nikomedes I (cf. HGC 7, 611) and a reverse used on issues of Prousias II (cf. HGC 7, 632–3) it is quite possible that this extremely rare coin might have been struck under Nikomedes II, successor to Prousias II.
