Ex PT Collection of the Later Empire, Roma Numismatics Ltd., E-Sale 54, 28 February 2019, lot 1048.

This exceptional type has been suggested as having been struck for the occasion of the marriage of Valentinian III to the daughter of Theodosius, Licinia Eudoxia. The issue is, on account of the mintmark, occasionally described as having been struck at Constantinople for use at Cherson. However, the crude fabric and unconventional style as well as major inconsistencies in the epigraphy point to local production at the important port city of Cherson.
